Everyday things as a designer are locked behind traditional binary structures. Girls/boys, black/white, and Sans-serif/serif. We don't consider the idea of typography being binary since there are many typefaces to work with but there are design rules that feel like they are limiting a designer to pre-set binary rules. Different typefaces challenge this binary set rule and open a world of different designs without these rules. In the book Extra Bold, author Ellen Lupton provides examples of different designers experimenting outside of the binary to create amazing works.
